When asked why certain things trigger anger management problems and others don’t most people will say something like “I dunno, its just always made me angry” or “Anyone would get angry about that”. But the reality is that we all have different anger management triggers. What gets me mad may roll off you like water and vice versa.
For each of us there are certain things that just get under our skin and gets our blood boiling and lead us to have problems with anger management. It’s a very personal experience – what angers me may leave you wondering why I am getting all bent out of shape over nothing and vice versa and I may be wondering the same about you. I’ve seen many couples struggle with this trigger issue – “How can you do something so terrible to me and not recognize what a big deal it is? What kind of person did I marry?” This kind of anger management problem can literally destroy a marriage.
The reason each of us have a different set of anger management triggers has to do with the way our brain works. The part of your brain that controls emotions is basically a memory processing machine operating in the background telling us how to respond to situations. Since we all had different experiences our emotional brains are going to process situations differently and because of that we each are going to experience different events as triggering anger.
Most of us have a fair idea of what our anger management triggers are. Not as many of us know what it is that makes a trigger so powerful for us. The key to understanding and managing your anger triggers more effectively is to understand that its not the anger trigger itself that’s so powerful – it’s the meaning that we associate with the trigger that gives it so much power.
I’ve put an article in the library, “How We Develop Anger Management Triggers” that looks at this issue in depth. Check it out, I think you will find a lot of valuable information and won’t be disappointed by what you fine there.
