One thing that I feel pretty strongly about is that a good anger management class should not be cookie cutter. Everyone has a different history, which is why we all have different things that get us angry as my recent posting on anger management triggers explained. Another reason an anger management class also should not be one size fits all is that since its our background which in large part determines what makes us angry and each of us have a different background then it follows that what works well for one person won’t necessarily work well with someone else. One of the unique aspects of my anger management class is that its very much designed to take these individual differences into account in helping you learn to manage your anger better.
One of the ways my anger management class helps you to begin to understand your anger patterns is by looking at your anger personality. In the 15 or so years that I have been working with people with anger management problems I’ve noticed that the way people express their anger generally falls into 6 different types – the volcano, the stuffer, the displacer, the prickly pear, the prosecuting attorney and the intimidator. Lets take a quick look at each one of these.
The Volcano anger management personality type is, as the name implies, explosive. These people are often described as the nicest people imaginable until angered and then – watch out!
The Stuffer anger management personality type is someone who doesn’t say anything when initially angered. They stuff and stuff until they blow.
The Displacer anger management personality type is someone who gets mad about one thing and then takes out their anger on someone else.
The Prickly Pear anger management personality type is someone who is very sensitive and seems constantly crabby.
The Prosecuting Attorney anger management personality type is a person who will ask question after question in an attempt to prove you wrong when angered.
The Intimidator anger management personality type is a person who uses their physical presence when angered in order to cause the other to submit.
Any of these ring a bell for you? To find out more detail about each personality type check out my special white paper report “Whats Your Anger Management Personality Type?”
